Putrajaya a tourist magnet

KUALA LUMPUR: The administrative capital in Putrajaya is just as popular as Kuala Lumpur – the official capital – with both local and foreign tourists.

S. Satiya and his family, who were visiting Putrajaya for the first time, said they were there because of its significance as Malaysia’s administrative capital.

“We’ll be taking a drive around the city and parks. We also went to the Promenade and Souq and enjoyed the view of the lake,” said the 34-year-old boiler technician from Shah Alam.

Picturesque setting: Suraya taking a photo of her family against the backdrop of the Prime Minister's Office in Putrajaya.

Suraya Mohammad, 32, a technician from Kedah, who was taking a walk around Masjid Putra and Dataran Putra with her family, said it was their first time in Putrajaya.

“The buildings and scenery here are beautiful, but the public toilets aren’t well-maintained.”

Paul Vaz, 62, who was holidaying in Malaysia for the second time and had visited the KL Tower and KLCC, was in Putrajaya with his friend Larry Tan on the latter's recommendation.

“It’s a beautiful place. I enjoy seeing the Islamic architecture of the buildings, which is similar to the Moghul architecture in India,” said the chairman of a management institute in Mumbai.

Jerantut resident Zali Busu, 39, comes for short trips to Kuala Lumpur every year with his family and visits places which offer activities for his four children.

“We usually go to the National Zoo, National Museum, National Planetarium and Petrosains Gallery, and shops in Chow Kit and Petaling Street,” said the government servant.

“The children like coming to KL. Their favourite place is the KLCC Park as they like to swim in the pool and play in the park.”

Law Chee Seng, 29, prefers going to shopping malls and seeing sights within Kuala Lumpur as he works in the construction business and does not have much time to travel.

“Since my in-laws and their families are from Pantai Remis, I’ll be taking them to KLCC and the Eye on Malaysia at Lake Titiwangsa.”

Backpacker Daniela Kuhn, 29, planned to soak in the city atmosphere in Kuala Lumpur and enjoy the natural environment of Taman Negara.

She will be going to KLCC, Merdeka Square, Islamic Arts Museum, Bird Park, National Mosque, Little India and Chinatown.

“I like the warm weather here and it helps that the locals speak good English,” said the German native who has backpacked alone in Vietnam, Laos, Cambodia and Thailand.

Putrajaya,gracious living for the raayat
I must say this ,Putrajaya is a real living comfort for the raayat. I think every states should follow this concept. Plan driven and very well administered. Of course there are slight problems every now and then but with every thing 'e' it is taken care quite fast. Everything is within reach and it makes it convenience for raayat Putrajaya. The bus is good, the school, supermarkets, hospitals, clinics, firebrigade and yes cinema at alamanda is really cool. The police are efficient, will arrive at your place within 5 minutes. Of course no where is safe nowadays but prevention here is practise by neighbours as there are no gates in the housing estate. Community halls almost at all precinct with class badminton courts(Proffessional coach available),swimming pools, beautiful horse riding clubs with nice restaurant, first class convention center, boulevard looks superb like the Manhattan in New York( we need to plant trees there as soon as possible). I hope it will turn to be into a great shopping center like Orchard road,Singapore and Oxford street in London. Cycling is great fun with family as you will find 3 metres footpath all over Putrajaya. Lake Club is ready at Precinct 8 and Precinct 6 with nice swimming pools, and you can learn sailing too. The Putra Mosque is must visit to all, really beautiful. Go down below the arcade you will find great food courts and nice view. Get on the cruise and experience the lake breeze that will take you to all the almost 35 small and big bridges design to capture your heart. Taman Warisan and Taman Botani is where you and family can learn all about trees anf herbs and enjoy all the food you can. Family day too can be held at the wetland in Putrajaya on a private island...barbecue..hem.

My sister in law came to visit us and said it is like coming into another country. Another says it is like London and another like Australia. The embassy enclave is almost ready at Precinct 15. In fact all architecture and designs are superb. Great superstructure and infrastructure.

All ministries except three to move to Putrajaya

PUTRAJAYA: All ministries, with the exception of the International Trade and Industry, Works and Defence, are expected to move to the federal administrative capital by 2010.

Putrajaya Corporation president Tan Sri Samsudin Osman said the construction of buildings to house several ministries was already ongoing while others were in planning stages, adding that the Unity, Culture, Arts and Heritage, and Tourism Ministries were among those that would be moving here soon.

“The three ministries have decided not to move as they consider their location strategic. They will continue to remain at their present location while other ministries operating in Kuala Lumpur are preparing to move to Putrajaya in the next two years or so,” he told reporters yesterday.

Samsudin said there would be more commercial buildings in the federal administrative capital to meet demands for such outlets, adding that currently, the only commercial buildings were the Putrajaya Holdings Sdn Bhd (PjH) building and the soon-to-be opened 26 Boulevard at Precinct 3.

Tengku Adnan urged to resign from Umno and BN posts

IPOH: Umno secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor should quit as Barisan Nasional and Umno secretary-general in light of the findings of the V.K. Lingam video clip case, said Ipoh Timor MP Lim Kit Siang.

“Undoubtedly, the Royal Commission of Inquiry has come up with a very adverse report on Tengku Adnan and five other VIPs, as the ‘fixers’ in the brokering of judicial appointment,” Lim said at a press conference at the Perak DAP headquarters yesterday.

He called on Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to immediately relieve Tengku Adnan of the two posts if the Government was serious and sincere in wanting reform.

“Tengku Adnan should be relieved of the two posts. Otherwise, it would mean that the Government has no confidence in the Royal Commission of Inquiry report,” he added.

The five other VIPs implicated in the commission’s report were lawyer Datuk V.K. Lingam, tycoon Tan Sri Vincent Tan, former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, and former Chief Justices Tun Eusoff Chin and Tun Ahmad Fairuz Sheikh Abdul Halim.

Lim, who also questioned Attorney-General Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail’s credentials in the important task of investigating Tengku Adnan and others, said a special prosecutor with full powers of investigation and prosecution should

be appointed to deal with the report.

“When the Lingam tape surfaced, he said there was nothing wrong as it was a monologue,” Lim said.

“He also said no further action, at that time, should be taken into the Anti-Corruption Agency investigations of Lingam and Eusoff holidaying in New Zealand,” Lim added.

On Dr Mahathir’s shock resignation from Umno, Lim said he was unsure if it would have any effect on the party’s leadership.

“From the reaction so far, not a single elected representative has resigned from Umno although a number of members have done so,” he added.

“Whether it would end up consolidating Pak Lah instead of weakening him is the pertinent question,” Lim said.

Putrajaya a blaze of colours with launch of Citrawarna Malaysia 2008

PUTRAJAYA: The federal administrative centre kicked off the twoweek school holidays with a kaleidoscope of colours last night.

It was indeed a feast of colours at the Citrawarna Malaysia 2008 in front of the Palace of Justice here.

A section of the host of traditional dancers participating in the Citrawarna Malaysia 2008 in front of the Palace of Justice in Putrajaya last night. The Sultan of Kedah Tuanku Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah launched the event. Also present was Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

Besides a 10-minute splendid fireworks display lighting up various motives such as butterflies, birds and bamboo – and a galaxy of stars – the thousands of visitors were entertained to cultural dances by some 1,600 performers.

The two-hour show took place along the stretch of boulevard in Precinct 3.

In line with this year's theme of “the Kingdom of Flora and Fauna”, there was even a decorated giant elephant on stage for the Indian segment of the show.

Local artistes Reshmonu, Nicky and Noreen Aziz belted out hits as the crowd sang along.

The event, the 10th annual edition, was launched by the Sultan of Kedah Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah. He was accompanied by his wife Sultanah Haminah Hamidun.

The royal couple, who were representing the Yang di-Pertuan Agong, made a grand entrance in a carriage drawn by a fine white steed.

Also present were Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said and other Cabinet members.

Najib later flagged off a convoy of 250 cars, which will tour the country.

“Our policies are to encourage the development of superior and viable tourism infrastructure, such as the building of resorts and hotels, better transportation and communication facilities, multi-lingual signages in transportation hubs, strict regulating of tour operators and the facilitation of immigration regulations,'' Najib said in his message in the souvenir programme.
